Support Your Local Farms!

With so much amazing produce and livestock grown right here in Southern California, it's a wonder that so many of us still purchase all of our produce at grocery stores. The most common excuses are a lack of time or simply not knowing how or where to go. There are several farmer's markets every week in virtually every corner of Los Angeles that showcase beautiful produce from just outside the city limits. There are several websites that show time and location listings, such as www.farmernet.com/events/cfms, which is very easy to navigate, and has several listings.

Another reason that most people don't make the effort to visit Farmer's Markets is because they may not understand the effects of shipping produce across the country, not to mention the world. Diesel emissions are a major contributor to our high air pollution levels. Just think about how many truckloads it takes to fill up one grocery store for a month. Even worse is the impact of the fuel that airplanes burn. Jet engines burn kerosene, which gives off carbon dioxide, a leading cause of ozone depletion. Another pressing issue is the fact that kerosene is manufactured from crude oil, and there is not viable alternative as of now.

The majority of commercial farms use large amounts of pesticides on their crops, which is not only harmful to the environment, but to humans and wildlife as well. Pesticides leak into nearby creeks and rivers during rainstorms and irrigation, which inevitably end up in our lakes and reservoirs. There are countless local farms that do not use pesticides, and are even fully organic and sustainable. By consuming these farmers' products, we're not only doing something good for ourselves and our families, but for the environment and future generations as well.

Please take a look at the pictures below of the gorgeous fruits and vegetables we're using from our local Los Angeles Farmer's Markets. For more information on enjoying fresh local produce at your event, contact Maison Catering:
